CWC Cable Nationals in the Philippines

The 2nd Philippine Cable Wakeboard Nationals took place at the Camsur Watersports Complex (CWC) in Camsur, Philippines on October 26-28th with over 100 participants in 10 divisions. Conditions were not ideal but it didn’t stop the riders from giving their best efforts. In an effort to have the best possible conditions for next year, Nationals will be moved to the last weekend of March.

U.S. pro riders Brian Grubb, Brandon Thomas and Keith Lidberg came out to help judge the event. Sam “Bobo” Collins and Lauren Ornsby, pro riders from Australia, were also present as judges. The international panel of judges gave the event a great boost in credibility. Besides coming as judges, they put on a great demonstration of skill on the cable lake.

The WWA Wake Park rules were adopted and allowed the event to flow smoothly and without interruption. The new rules will be used for all future contests at CWC.

Author King was able to defend his title in the Mens Pro Wakeboard division. Dan Saraza and Ricky Otilla were second and third, respectively.

In the mens division, Rene Imperial won with Phillip Ja Nacario in second and Arch Errol Villamora in third.

Januson Dy dominated the masters division (over 30) with his first title win. Ernie Lopez took top honors in the Veterans (over 40) class. Ernie’s wife, Jeena Lopez took first in the Open Womens division making them the new dynamic duo of wakeboarding. Last year, it was the husband and wife team of Author and Martha King who won their respective divisions.

Luigi Villafuerte earned the gold in the groms division. Julio Villafuerte won the ever-challenging jr. mens division with brother, Miguel close behind in second and R. Ona in third.

Kateleen Reyes was the only girls division competitor so she won unopposed. Ma. Josefa Feliza Ermita won the Junior women’s division.

The open wakeskate division was a tough battle with local rider, Dennis Divinagracia coming out on top. Andrae Boy Baes came in second followed by Paul Familiaran in 3rd.

The overall event was a great success despite the conditions. This proves the sport of wakeboarding in the Philippines is growing strong and the riders are willing to support it through the tough times.
