Byerly Toe Jam #4 - Day 3 of 3

By Byerly Toe Jam Press Release

Cable And Overall Title On The Line At OWC

Conditions were perfect at the Orlando Watersports Complex today for cable riding during the final event of the 2007 Toe Jam wakeskate series, The Byerly Toe Jam presented by O'Neill.

16 Of today's best pro wakeskaters battled it out on the rails and also pushed the level with flip tricks, big spins and 360 shoves off the water's surface. After 28 runs, the judges narrowed the field down to two riders, Reed Hansen and TSR Cable Jam champion, Bret Little.

Little rode solid all day, but missed his kickflip in the finals, leaving the door open for Hansen, who proceeded to land five different flip tricks and a front board backside big spin off the Reef box. The flip tricks included a kickflip, varial flip, frontside flip, 360 flip and a double kickflip at the very end of his run.

The crowd was amazed with this run, and even Hansen himself was taken back by his performance. "If you told me to go back out there and do that again, there's no way I could."

Hansen was also very appreciative of the opportunity to bring his riding to the biggest stage in wakeskating. "I have to thank Scott Byerly for creating the Toe Jam. Not only did he help pioneer our sport, but also this contest series which is totally legit. It gets everybody together and pushes the sport. So many new tricks have gone down this year and the whole series has been unreal."

Known as the winningest wakeskater in the sport, Brian Grubb earned the overall title and a brand new Sea-Doo Wake edition PWC for his cumulative points earned from the four events. Nick Taylor came in second followed by Ben Kaiser in third.

Clint Tompkins was still basking in his Winch Best Trick title from Friday night, where he landed a 270 to switch front board to win. Other titles from the 2007 Byerly Toe Jam include the following:

2007 Byerly Toe Jam Champions

Byerly Toe Jam #4 - Day 2 of 3

By Byerly Toe Jam Press Release

Another Climactic Wakeskating Throwdown At The Projects

16 Of the world’s best wakeskaters challenged each other today in the rail park at The Projects in Bithlo, Florida during the final event of the 2007 Toe Jam wakeskate series, The Byerly Toe Jam presented by O’Neill.

Glassy conditions helped produce a high level of rail riding, lip moves and flip tricks. The final four consisted of Brian Grubb vs. Ben Horan and Brandon Thomas vs. Nick Taylor. With great runs by all, the scores were close and went in the favor of the younger guns over the Toe Jam veterans.

Horan and Taylor put together amazing runs in the head-to-head final. Horan landed both switch and regular boardslide big spins, as well as a kickflip, varial flip and capped his run with a solid kickflip off the flat rail, a move that wasn’t done by anyone else all day.

That was enough to score Horan a first place finish, his first Toe Jam victory ever. After being one of the most talked-about riders of the year, Horan showed his poise in a contest arena and pulled an amazing feat, especially for a rider who was only entered in the contest by a wildcard decision.

“This was one of the best wakeskating days I’ve had in my life,” Horan said. “It’s very difficult to win this event. Going against Clint Tompkins was the most difficult time I ever had wakeskating. He’s a very, very good wakeskater. Grubby and Nick were also tough to beat.”

One of the most important aspects of the Toe Jam is the progression that it facilitates and Horan’s perfomance is a perfect example. “The whole Toe Jam is the best thing for wakeskating right now. Scott Byerly is doing a great job with these events. It just brings all aspects of wakeskating together and pushes everybody.”

Saturday will wrap up with a cable jam and awards party at the Orlando Watersports Complex starting at 10 a.m.

Byerly Toe Jam #4 – Day 1 of 3

By Byerly Toe Jam Press Release

Grubb Wins Boat Riding Event At The Projects

Another epic wake final went down today at The Projects during the final event of the 2007 Toe Jam wakeskate series, The Byerly Toe Jam presented by O'Neill.

Standout rider Ben Kaiser met Brian Grubb in the head-to-head final for another amazing Toe Jam showdown. Grubb was coming off a three-peat of wake victories on the 2007 Toe Jam series and was in great shape heading into the finals by winning the coin toss, opting to ride second. Aaron Reed was another standout rider today landing a huge shifty into the flats as well as a nosebone backside 180 and heelside 360.

In the final, Kaiser put together a decent run including a toeside shove-indy, frontside 360, backside 360 and smooth mute 180 off the double up. Then Grubb took to the water throwing down another amazing, flawless run that the Toe Jam is accustomed to seeing with a backside 180, toeside shove indy rewind, mute 360 and a perfect heelside shove indy off the double up.

Grubb was elated after his finals run, which was plenty to take the victory. "The Toe Jam gets harder every year. The level is so high now, so that means more with every win. Bringing 16 of the top wakeskaters together for four contests a year shows everybody the level that wakeskating is at now and the possibilities for the future."

Friday will consist of a rail contest at The Projects, as well as a winch "Best Trick" final, a famous event in Byerly Toe Jam history. Saturday will wrap up with a cable jam and awards party at the Orlando Watersports Complex.

King Of Cable Results

Princes Club, London – The final event on the cable wakeboard scene in the UK took place Saturday 22nd September, and featured the top UK and European cable wakeboarders vying for the title of King and Queen of Cable 2007.

The competition allows the winner from each age division the opportunity to compete against each other, giving the younger riders a chance to take on the bigger kids! With £1750 in cash and loads of great prizes up for grabs there was lots of interest and we were excited to welcome entrants from Hungary and Holland.

This year saw 60 entrants take to the water, and an ever increasing band of support from the bank. The added spectacle of the Relentless FMX team on their 45 metre gap ramp made it an awesome day out for the crowd. Added to this was the fact that as the only UK site with 2 cables spectators were able to try out their own tricks while the competition was running.

The level of riding was outstanding, even in the most junior division the youngest competitor Connor Floyd (born 2000!) entertained. Jack Battleday pulled out some great tricks, earning himself the chance to compete for cash against the winners of the other male divisions later in the day.

Mayanka Jansen from Holland showed the girls how it was done with an exceptional selection of air tricks. It was a shame that Princes’ own defending champion Victoria Young couldn’t give Mayanka a run for her money due to a sprained ankle. It would have been a sight to see her defend her title against the European girls. Another Princes rider Connor Jones pulled off a storming run in the boys division to head off the other 9 contenders. Connor’s sister Chloe followed up in the junior ladies division beating off fellow competitor Charlotte Hemming from WakeMK.

Next on the dock were the junior men, this division has always been a hard contest as these kids throw it all on the line to win. CK Koester from JBSki went out and pulled off a technically faultless run, which was finished off with a 900 off the kicker putting him in contention for the best trick of the day prize. CK was followed by local rider James Young who was right on his heels with the technical tricks but just couldn’t edge him out. Another Princes hopeful Lewis Cornwall had pole position at the end of Round 1, but was unable to hold his lead with a shock fall just after the 5th corner, handing the 1st place and chance to win the title of King to CK.

It was great to see the women’s division with so many entries this year, and especially pleasing to see such an international start list, with the likes of Kath Moore from Australia and Kinga Horvath from Hungary. Despite being a boat specialist Kath managed to fend off Suzie Clist for 3rd spot, followed by Liu Batchelor who took second and world renowned Kinga took the top spot and went on to take the crown off Tor and a tidy cash prize as Queen of Cable for 2007.

The master’s men division was a hard fought battle between the 11 entrants with Stu Marston just edging out first place qualifier Larry Donaghey to take the title and a brand new X-Box 360. Paul Jones confirmed his family’s stronghold on cable wakeboarding by making it onto the podium (albeit in 3rd place).

Before the last big final of the day the FMX guys had one more show to perform. These guys are nuts – they only had a small area of grass on each side of the jump but still managed to get 45 feet in the air. The more noise the crowd made the harder the guys were trying. This was a great way to get the crowd going and an awesome prelude to the open men’s final.

The reigning monarch Nick Davies was unfortunately out of the competition, as he was busy competing at the world cup in Singapore but this gave some of the other guys a chance to show their stuff. It was great to see an in form Garry Stelfox (South Africa) back after being out last year with a knee injury. He put together a very strong run but fell on his last trick off the kicker. This gave Princes rider Ben Hitch an opening, and he took it with both hands, going big and clean with his aggressive style and landing two 720 spins. This put him in the lead and it was going to take some doing to wrench the top spot off him. That was until fellow Princes Pro Jonty Green hit the water, landing a double S-Bend, a 540 and a 720 spin. This gave the judges something to ponder and it took them some deliberating before they could announce the final results, with Jonty just edging out Ben, closely followed by Garry.

With the light fading fast there wasn’t much time to hang around. The distinctive format of this comp requires the winners of each division to take it out for one last lap to compete for the title of King and Queen. So it was that Chloe, Mayanka and Kinga headed out into the sunset. The two younger girls laid it all down but the more experienced Kinga knew what she had to do to beat them and she made sure of it by standing up her run to take the title and £750 cash.

The battle for King was a tougher one with 5 competitors in total. Jack, Connor and Stuart put on an awesome display and showed that their chance to compete for King was well deserved. However, when CK failed to play his best hand, it left the door wide open for Jonty who knew that all he had to do was stand up his run, land some of his harder tricks and he would walk home with the £1000. So the King Jonty Green and Queen Kinga Horváth were crowned and another great King of Cable comp at Princes Club, London was complete.

We look forward to seeing you all back here for the 2008 comp and hope that we can attract an even wider audience from the international wakeboard community. The event was filmed by Nick & Dom and a trailer will be up on our website www.princesclub.com soon.

Princes Club would like to thank all the competitors, spectators, organisers and judges for making it such a great day. It would not have been possible without the help of our sponsors, so a huge thanks to Relentless, Analog, Oakley, Xbox 360, Vans, Pro-Tec, Gravis, Princes Shop, Innocent Smoothies and Corona.

Jägermeister Wake Riderz - Results

Mike Ketellapper rocks at Jägermeister Wake Riderz

The third edition off the Jägermeister Wake Riderz was organised at Lido-Almere again. Compared to the other editions before, the event started already the night before with a night ride and pre party. After the party it was time to wake up and start the competition. The level of riding is getting stronger and stronger every year. Last year Sjors van de Kerkhof was the best overall rider. Coming back of a knee injury Sjors couldn’t do it again this year. Local rider and European Cable Wakeboard Tour winner Mike Ketellapper was the strongest in all disciplines.

The competition is known for his three disciplines; best trick, big air and obstacle contest. From the qualifications six riders where placed into the finals where they battled for the podium. Mike Ketellapper was unbeatable again by winning all three disciplines. In the best trick discipline Mike placed himself in front of Marcel Doorgeest (KGB and S-bend to blind) and UK rider Christian “CK” Koester (313 and front to blind) with a KGB and a switch S-bend to blind.

Third at the obstacle contest was UK rider Richie Hiney with a BS 360 over the slider, a huge BS 360 over the kicker and a stylish transfer on the funbox. Marcel Doorgeest did a fronstside boardslide 540 over the slider, whirley 540 over the kicker and transferring the funbox with a frontside boardslide 270 out. Also here it wasn’t enough to beat Mike Ketellapper. Mike won the obstacle contest with a fronside boardslide, 900 over the kicker and frontside boardslide 270 out.

The last category was the big air. Where the riders got on the Indian rope to bust the biggest air. Dutch riders Marcel Doorgeest, Jan Kerkhoven and Mike Ketellapper are the winners in this discipline. Mike was the highest one (7,50 m) before Jan (7,20 m) and Marcel (7,10 m).

Tom Fooshee Sweeps 2007 Wake Park Nationals

By WWA Press Release

Riders from across the country took to the water at the Orlando Watersports Complex (OWC) in Florida over the weekend to compete for titles in the 2007 WWA Wake Park Nationals. Competitors also battled it out on the cable to earn points towards the series title, as this contest concluded the 3rd stop of the WWA Wake Park Series presented by Ten-80.

This event also incorporated the Liquid Force Obstacles-Only Division where riders threw down their most savory maneuvers in a 10-minute jam-style format and showcased their skills on the rails, kickers and other apparatuses that OWC has to offer. Some of the standout moves were Aussie Mitch Langfield's toe back 7 off the kicker and Keith Lidberg's super stylish TS front board transfer to fakie on Nessy, but in the end it was Tom Fooshee of Texas who was the overall winner incorporating a switch heelside 9 off the kicker during the allotted time.

The competition grew fierce on the water in the Pro Men head-to-head finals as Tom Fooshee and Mitch Langfield fought for the National Championship title. Langfield stoked the crowd out with his KGB, ollie 180 to switch nose press onto the flat bar with a BS 180 out and a HS backside 5 off the kicker, but it was Fooshee who took the win with his nose grab slim chance, backside 7 and switch HS 7 off the kickers. Rob Mapp of Florida claimed 3rd with a huge KGB, switch back mobe and massive TS 7 off the kicker while Josh Rice of Texas took a respectable 4th place finish in the Pro Men division.

OWC local Anna Hajek attempted a heel 7 off the kicker in the Open Women's division and just fell short on the landing, but made up for it with some stylish hits on the A-Frame and picnic table giving her a 3rd place finish in that category. Kayla Chojnacki of Florida took 2nd in Open Women while Alizee Brion of France took the 1st place National title with a press on the flat bar and scarecrow off the kicker.

Nick Kamper of Florida took the Jr. Men 1st place title, while Andrew Masi finished in 2nd and Michael Rossi ended up with a 3rd place finish.

One of the most exciting divisions of the day was the Pro Wakeskate category where riders threw down some super tech tricks including Andrew Pastura's back bigspin to back lip; 270 shuv out on the box, as well as, Kyle Hyam's switch 270 to front board; shuv out. Bret Little of Texas put the pressure on early with a back bigspin to back lip; shuv out on the box, kickflip, and shuv to back board onto the flat rail in a line that gave him the victory over other riders. Andrew Pastura and Kyle Hyams finished in 2nd and 3rd respectively.

Liquid Force Brings The Truth #51

By Liquid Force Press Release

LF faithful, welcome to the post Worlds (AKA...the week after LF domination of the WWA World Championships) edition of the Truth. Sit down, relax and enjoy some insight into the world we call Liquid Force.

Shane Bonifay gets fifth at the Worlds... That’s right, Shane Bonifay has been on fire lately and it continued this past weekend at the WWA World Championships in Reno. After recently landing the toeside backside 720 and then following up with a win at the Malibu Team Challenge double up event, Shane continued his strong season by making it into Sunday’s main event. His run in the semifinals was, in Tony Finn’s opinion, "Easily one of the top two runs I saw all weekend. Shane was killing it and doing it with his unique style, as always. He even threw an S-bend into his run. It was classic! When do you ever see Shane throw an S-bend? He definitely was throwing down and trying to win the contest!"

Oh yeah, the rest of our team did pretty well, too. Did we forget to tell you that we had six World Champions riding LF? Haha…we were so fired up about Shane that we forget to point out that our team dominated the contest scene in a sea of contest teams. Since when did we become such a great contest team?

Phillip Soven continued to prove that he is the best wakeboarder in the world right now. He has won pretty much every contest that he’s entered this season and only seems to be getting better. With perhaps the most technically solid run yet, Phillip took down JD Webb to claim his World Championship title. "I'm stoked about this win. It's such a great honor to be recognized as a World Champion," said Soven while on the podium. "I've had such a great year this season and to add a world title onto it makes it so much sweeter." A smart gambler would put their money on Phillip to take the next 10 World Titles. He’s that good!

Amber Wing rode consistent all weekend and claimed her first world title in impressive form. Between filming for the new Oakley film and working at Maven Sessions, it’s amazing that she had time to compete, let alone win! Amber was very excited about her victory. "Winning the World Title is a dream come true," Wing said on the podium. “It has always been a dream and I didn’t know the reality was going to come so soon. I was focusing more on my freeriding and video section for Push Process than my contest riding this year. I stood my passes up in tough conditions and stomped my double up to take the title. The reality has not kicked in yet.”

Claiming another podium position for the LF/Maven crew, Nicola Butler took third place and continued to show signs that she may one day take a world title of her own.

Another member of LF’s Aussie squad, 16-year-old Mitch Langfield, has taken the US, and now the Worlds, by storm. Mitch was three for three this season as he won all 3 major events he entered. The Jr. Phenom from Australia is one that will be noticed for years to come!

13-Year-old Harley Clifford claimed the Boys World Title and proved that Australians are pretty good at wakeboarding and that LF likes Australians. Harley was our third Australian team rider to win the World Champ title this year. He's been ripping all year and is poised to take the Jr. Men division by storm next season.

Rounding out our list of World Champions was Raimi Merritt, who took the Girls division, and Jason Soven, who took the 9 and under, Jr. Boys division. Not a bad weekend for the Soven family or the LF crew!

BROstock stop #3 - August 10-12 - Smith Mt. Lakes, Virginia sets a new standard for BROstock! In case you haven’t heard, the third Brostock recently went down at Smith Mountain Lake in Moneta, Virginia. If you weren’t there, you missed out. The weather was HOT and Brostock was even HOTTER. The event took place at a spot on the lake known by the locals as The Cliffs. Aaron Reed, Danny Hampson, Shawn Watson, Ben Greenwood, Collin Harrington, Silas Thurman and the Maven crew were on hand for what was the best Brostock to date.

Thursday night’s autograph session and cookout at Wake N Skate got the festivities started and they didn’t slow down all weekend. Friday started out with a double up session by the LF pro team and some local talent as well. Brian Reeder and Matt Hirschbiel held it down for their home town. The people at SML definitely know how to party lake style. There was a float party that consisted of a few hundred people and over 50 wakeboard boats drifting around the LF house boats all weekend long!

If you are ever in the SML area, be sure to go by Wake N Skate. Gary and his crew will take care of you like you’re a part of the family. As always, huge thanks go out to our BROstock sponsors, Monster Energy, Malibu Boats, Spy Optic and DVS Shoes.

Did you miss the first three BROstocks? You have one more opportunity this year…BROstock Canada is this weekend, August 31-Sept 1 at Lake Shuswap, Canada. BROstock is going international in 2007. O,, so we’re not going that far, but we are crossing the border to visit our friends up north. If you’d care to join us, be sure to contact the friendly folks at Twin Anchors Marina to find out where the crew will be.

The festivities will kick off on Friday with an afternoon double up session at 4:00 that will turn into the evening kickoff party. Bring your houseboat and wakeboats and tie off to our floating party. Things continue on Saturday as the crew goes double upping again at 12:00. History was made at BROStock Lake Oroville as Shane became the first rider to stick a toeside backside 720. What magic moments will go down at this BROstock? All we can say is you better put your party shoes on, eh!

Riders that will be in attendance at the fourth and final BROstock event for 2007 include the following LF stars; Shawn Watson, Kevin Henshaw, Shane Bonifay, Aaron Reed, Collin Harrington, Tino Santori, Silas Thurman, Melissa Marquardt and Keith Lyman.

To check out a complete photo gallery from the first three BROstock events, go to www.liquidforce.com. Video clips will be coming soon!

The Truth has gone international. Here are some stories our international correspondents forwarded us recently...

“July 28-29 were fun days of wakeboarding in Dnepropetrovsk Paddling channel (Ukraine). It was Liquid Force Cup of Ukraine. The Cup was created by the local distributor in Ukraine. 22 Riders from Dnepropetrovsk, Kharkov and Kiev (six women/Mavens included) were in fight for the Cup. All levels of riding skills were welcomed! Some riders had pleasure making new tricks and it was perfect opportunity to increase their level of riding.

The Cup was taken by Dmitriy Massalov. Second place went to Dmitriy Yermolenko and third was grabbed by Valeriy Gospodynko. The top two women were Valja Zubko and Marina Litash while the youngest rider of the contest was Masha Yevdokimova (12 years old!). Thanks for all riders and sponsors who were with us at this great event. The best riders grabbed over $2000 in money andequipment from Liquid Force and Clean For Speed.” –Elena from LF Ukraine

“Just thought I'd send a rough of an ad we are doing for Cable Ski Cairns so you can see what we have been up to.”- Mick Neville from Masterline (LF Australia).

“Here are some photos from our recent Slider Event in Italy. We thought you friends would enjoy.” – Massimo Gerosa from LF Italy

That’s it for this edition of The Truth. Stay tuned for your next dose and more info on the always fun world of Liquid Force!
